Grace LaForge Bio
“To Be of Use” by Marge Piercy is one of my favorite poems, so it follows that I tend to make useful items on and off the wheel. For even more fun, I create small animals, sculptural pieces and jewelry.
During my time as a teacher of Art, I began to rely on using clay more than any other medium since it is so forgiving – you make a mistake and you mush it together and start over. It does require practice and persistence but, in the end, you have a durable artifact.
While teaching, I began to increase my ceramics skills at The Center for Contemporary Art, Old Church Cultural Center and Peters Valley. When I retired in 2020, I became involved in resurrecting the pottery studio at the duCret Center of Art in Plainfield. My time spent working alongside artist, Simon Keller there, gave me an affinity for essential materials: wild clay, ash glaze, slips and oxides, and uncomplicated forms. It is the reason I like to leave some clay unglazed and touchable, as a nod to this wondrous material that we find beneath our feet.
