Sue Nuzzo Pottery

“I put my hands in clay and never took them out.”

Sue Nuzzo’s love of making forms began in childhood, when her mother allowed creativity to take over the family kitchen. She mixed flour and water into dough, sculpted small forms, and baked them in the oven; early experiments that sparked a lifelong connection to working with her hands.

She formally discovered pottery while taking classes at Middlesex College. Although she majored in French, Sue continued studying ceramics after transferring to Rutgers, realizing that clay would always be an essential part of her life. This realization led her to purchase her own wheel and kiln and establish a home studio known as Sue’s Pottery Church. The studio is housed in an oversized garage originally built as a church in 1950, a space once used for sermons that now serves as a place for creativity and reflection.

Over the years, Sue has created and sold her work at local juried art and craft shows. For fifteen years, she worked as a pottery instructor at Edison Township Community School, where she shared her love of the pottery process with hundreds of students. After a twenty-five-year career teaching elementary school, Sue retired and returned fully to the studio. Today, she dedicates her time and energy once again to creating with clay.

Artist Statement
Sue Nuzzo’s work is inspired by nature—flowers, garden plants, and the work of other artists. She creates primarily functional, wheel-thrown pottery, often enhanced with sculptural details drawn from organic forms. She enjoys developing cohesive collections of pots intended as favors to celebrate weddings, new babies, and showers, with each piece designed to feel both personal and useful. While she previously worked mainly in low-fire porcelain, Sue has recently transitioned to stoneware, embracing its warmth, durability, and versatility.
