Statement

Terry Sherman

My current ceramic work has developed over the past two years, after I retired from teaching high school art in the New Jersey Public Schools for almost thirty years.  I taught drawing, collage, ceramics and mosaics.

My work is all hand built from porcelain, from black clay slabs or from a combination of both. It reflects my interest in combining black and porcelain clay to create graceful forms that have a presence, have surfaces rich in linear patterning or texture, and can be displayed in either an interior or an exterior space.  In recent work, I have added mason stains to porcelain in order to bring color into my work.   I approach the surface of each form as a linear and gestural drawing in clay.  My line work is inspired by calligraphy and by symbolic imagery.
